What books should you recommend for your kids?
Although we tend to think that books, in general, have a positive effect on children, this is not always true. A book may be good or bad depending on several factors. Some of which are the age of a child and content or subject matter of the book. I have listed below some examples of books that can be either good or bad for your kids.
Three Books I Would Recommend
Some books are just plain good. They make your child a better person. They make them develop good character. They make them smarter. They make them happier. They make them... what others were twenty years ago. Here are some pictures, complete with descriptions, titles, and authors, of books that are just plain great.
1. The BFG (Big Friendly Giant)
Title: The BFG (Big Friendly Giant)
Author: Dahl, Roald
Description: One night a girl named Sophie can't sleep. She decides to look out the window of her orphanage and sees a giant walking down the street, blowing something into windows. However, the giant spots her and takes her to his desert cave home. Then, in his version of English, which was hard to understand, he explains to Sophie that he was blowing dreams into children's minds. He also mentions that each of all the other giants in the desert, whom he is only half the size of, eat children all over the world. He, though, is the BFG (Big Friendly Giant) and eats nothing asides from snozzcumbers, which are very disgusting. Then, when all of the other giants head to England to eat children, Sophie creates a plan involving the Queen of England, the BFG, and dreams in order to stop the giants, once and for all. Just make sure your child knows that this story is completely fictitious.
2. Geronimo Stilton (Series)
Title: Geronimo Stilton (Series)
Author: Stilton, Geronimo (based on what the books say. However, it was actually created by Elisabetta Dami)
Description: The editor of the Rodent's Gazette as well as an author, Geronimo Stilton, who is rather smart, hates traveling. Unfortunately for him, traveling is the thing he does most. Follow Geronimo on his many trips around the world. You might even be accompanied by Geronimo's sister, Thea, his cousin, Trap, and/or Benjamin, Geronimo's sweet and loving nine-year old nephew. Perhaps finding treasure is what you are going to be doing. Maybe you'll have to go to Egypt. Or, possibly, be forced to face your fears. You could also watch Geronimo get picked on by Thea and Trap. Then again, seeing the bond between Benjamin and him might be what you want to do. Whatever it is you want to do, you will likely do it if you come with Geronimo Stilton!

Three Books I Would Not Recommend
Not all books can be good. Sometimes, books are bad. Books like the ones listed could have horrible effects on children. Inappropriate material, such as bad role models, thoughts, and themes are the kinds of books your children might love (or even hate). In the end, though, they may quite possibly end up applying the book's material into real life. In the long run, your child might eventually hate the book because it got them into trouble or maybe even caused something horrible to happen. Don't let your children read these books!
1. Captain Underpants (Series)
Title: Captain Underpants (Series)
Author: Pilkey, Dav
Description: The series follows the lives of two mischief-makers, fourth-graders George Beard and Harold Hutchins, who is his best friend. Their exceptionally mean principal, Mr. Krupp, was hypnotized into thinking that he was "Captain Underpants," who is the subject of most of George and Harold's comics. Unfortunately, Mr. Krupp thinks he really is Captain Underpants, as opposed to the best friends thinking of it as a joke. George, Harold, and Captain Underpants/Mr. Krupp go on many adventures and save the world more than once. Although very humorous, this book may prompt its reader to do things that should not be done. Unless your child is old enough to understand it and not apply it into real life, don't buy this book.

2. The Bum Trilogy (Series)
Title: The Bum Trilogy (Series)
Author: Griffiths, Andy
Description: This series centers on Zack Freeman, a twelve-year old boy whose bottom runs away from him. Containing a lot of toilet humor, this book may be funny, but not very appropriate. This book might teach your child to use too much toilet humor, resulting in them getting into trouble. Don’t buy it until your child is old enough to understand that the toilet humor contained inside is not supposed to be incorporated into real life or used at certain times.

3. Struwwelpeter
Title: Struwwelpeter
Author: Hoffman, Heinrich
Description: Although it says that inside of it there are funny pictures and merry stories, Struwwelpeter is the exact opposite of what is stated. It is possibly one of the worst books to ever be published. Pictures of girls burning to death freak people out. All the less are they hilarious. The stories are even worse. I don't think any children can be cheered up by apprehending their future to be disastrous. Why? Because they suck their thumb, that's why. Although somewhat rare, as it was published in the late 1800s, this book is still sold. So, if you happen to come across it, don't buy it. Especially for your child that's crying "No! But it's cool fairy tales!" or something similar to that.It really is a terrible book. Don't get it. At all. Read it to your child as a bedtime story if they've been naughty at the worst if you, for some reason, already have it. Actually, don't. That's how horrible it is.
