Summary: What I Learned
First off, I’ll talk about gaming’s effects on children. Although most people believe that reading is better than gaming, that is not always true (even though it is true most of the time). Usually, when people think of gaming, they think of effects that are usually negative on children like “rots the brain,” “makes you stupid,” “encourages drugs,” etc. However, gaming also has positive effects on children. Some of them are “makes you smarter,” “improves hand-eye coordination,” and “introduces children to computer and information technology.”
There are many video games that give children bad character, a poor view of women, and the encouraging of the use of drugs, alcohol, and more. These video games can really make a child a terrible person. Whether they make children stupid, encourage things that should be discouraged (such as violence), or isolate them, these video games are just plain horrible. Too bad some children don’t realize that what they are really doing is making them a worse child overall. These video games are definitely not assets to children’s lives and should not be played by them.
Then there are the good video games. Good video games can be fun to play, yet still help a child with things such as school work, which includes school subjects such as Math, Language Arts, Science, etc. These video games might capture a child’s interest and fascinate them with their topic(s). Also, some video games encourage children to get fit. This provides hope for obese children to get thinner. Given the rising rate of childhood obesity today, these video games are invaluable. Both these types of video games can make a child a wonderful person. Whether it’s making a child more intelligent or lowering the rate of obese children, these video games are just plain terrific. Good thing that some children realize that only some video games are right to play. These two types of video games are great assets to a child’s life and should be played by them. The only exceptions are children who are not overweight at all, who do not really have a reason to play video games that encourage children to not be overweight. That number is probably not very big.
Next, I will talk about the effects of reading on children. Almost all people in the right mind believe that reading is better than gaming. And to tell you the truth, it really is, just not always. Most of the effects of reading on children are thought to be things like “makes you more intelligent,” “encourages good character,” “expands your imagination,” etc. Sadly, reading does have its bad sides. Some negative effects of reading include “creates bad thoughts,” “sets bad role models,” and “contains inappropriate material.”
Lots of books are good books. They encourage children to have good character, expand their knowledge, bring out the creativity already inside of them, and more. These books make children better people overall. Whether they make children smarter, entice them in a fantastic and appropriate world of fantasy, or take you with them on trips that were once thought to be very unlikely to ever happen, these books are just plain marvelous. They should definitely be read by children and are a positive help in their lives.
Unfortunately, there are bad books, too. These books set horrific role models for children, contain inappropriate material, and encourage bad things. These books make children just plain bad people. Whether it’s the encouragement of awful things, the containing of bad thoughts, or the setting of a disappointing role model, these books are appalling and should definitely be avoided by children and, if read by a child, will be a negative assist in his or her life.
Now that you’ve read my one-page summary on my QUEST Independent Study Topic, the Effects of Books and Video Games on Children, use your possibly newfound knowledge to your aid. The next time your child asks you to buy a book that does not seem very bad, think about this paper. Then, rethink whether you should really buy that book for your child. You will be glad that you did. Trust me.J
